The USDA issued seals that are used to verify items that are organic. The government laid the rules that must be followed if any companies want to claim that their products are organic. Therefore any products must be verified according to the USDA regulations before they can qualify to be an natural organic product.
However, for organic farmers with gross sales less than $5000 and selling their items directly to the public are exempted. Although these farmers are allowed to tell the public that their products are organic, you cannot use the official organic seal on their products.
According to rules and regulations of the USDA, if cannot use irradiation on food items. Sewage sludge and genetically modified organisms are also not allowed during processing. On top of that, organic food processors and growers must go along with the recommendations provided by the NOSB in regards to the amount of allowable synthetic substances as well as natural substances.
The USDA also divided the natural organic products into 4 different categories. They are based on the percentage amount of organic substances found in each product. The official USDA organic seal can be placed on products which are 100% organic substances. Products that contain at least 95% (excluding salt and water content) are allowed to use the organic seal.
As for natural organic products with 70% organic substances can place a label on their products stating 'Made with Organic' and also mention 3 substances contained in the product. Products with less 70% of organic substances are allowed to list the organic substances on the ingredients label but cannot use the word organic.
